EC: Indelible ink’s colour is top secret, so no public demo

The Election Commission (EC) has refused to demonstrate how long the indelible ink to be used in advance voting can last, as the colour of the ink is a top secret.

NONE“We can’t show it to the public, because the colour of the indelible ink is secret,” said EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof (left in photo).

“But we have tested the ink many, many times within the EC and the (supplier) company,” he said, turning down a request by electoral reform group Bersih for a public demonstration.

Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga has yesterday urged EC todemonstrate how long the indelible ink used in advanced voting can last, as the group received information that the ink would not last beyond five days.

The EC has set April 30, five days before the general election, for 200,000 police and security forces personnel to vote earlier.

He said EC will use two different-coloured inks for advance voting and ordinary voting, which can last at least seven days and three days respectively.

“I can guarantee that the ink can last for at least seven days,” he said, adding that the ink contains pigments, silver nitrate and herbal materials.

The EC has made the ink a top secret, with the inks’ colours and supplier not made known to public, to prevent the inks from being copied, he said, and as such Bersih has no way to get the relevant information.

A group trained to disrupt polling day

A group trained to disrupt polling day – Tunku Abdul Aziz

KUALA LUMPUR: Former DAP vice chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim today revealed that special training was conducted by an election watchdog to create chaos during polling day.

Claiming that he was reliably informed, Tunku Abdul Aziz revealed that a group of people was trained by Tindak Malaysia to disrupt the process by challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) presiding officer or Ketua Tempat Mengundi (KTM), a step he said was meant to tarnish the EC.

“They were trained to create chaos and dissatisfaction by raising repeated protests at the polling station, no matter how frivolous and unreasonable, so as to cause others waiting in the queue to be unhappy with the EC,” Tunku Aziz told a press conference

“It is also designed to delay the entire voting process thereby causing long queues and congestion at certain designated polling stations.”

Tunku Aziz said the plan is to cast a negative perception and aspersions and finally to stir public outrage against the EC and thus bring it into disrepute.

A quick check by The Mole at Tindak Malaysia’s official Facebook and Twitter pages and forum showed that the NGO is working closely with the Bersih movement to pressure the EC and the government.

Tunku Aziz later revealed that one particular aspect of the training session was related to teaching voters how to guard the secrecy of their votes.

“They were trained, encouraged and urged to demand for the randomisation of their ballot papers in order to guarantee secrecy of their votes,” he said.

“They are encouraged to be vocal and challenge the election clerks on duty as well as (accuse) the KTM of committing an electoral offence if they refuse to issue a random ballot to the voter.

“The polling agent on duty has also been trained to support such a ‘request’ by the voter where he will support the demand and object to the KTM in rejecting such a request. This will help pressure the KTM,” he said further.

Previously, it was reported that there was a letter, believed sent by the PKR deputy president’s office to a few of the party’s officers, providing strategies on how to create chaos at polling stations.

The letter, which was published by blog Gelagat Anwar, listed several steps to prevent Barisan Nasional from keeping its hold on the government, including how to create negative public perception against the EC.

Fifty young lawyers, who have been mandated to be the party’s polling agents, were instructed to keep on protesting on any issue as an attempt to pressurise the EC,” the blogger wrote.

The letter also stated a few hot parliamentary seats could trigger the chaos, including Gombak, Lembah Pantai, Permatang Pauh, Setiawangsa and Wangsa Maju.

Blogger Syed Akbar Ali wrote in his blog OutSyed The Box that some voters had been told to bring their own ballpoint pens and rulers without really knowing why.

He also claimed there was information that churches are telling their congregations about voting procedures, which he thought quite out of the ordinary.

Why do the Churches wish to play the role of self appointed election agents? And please do not poison the minds of your congregations to bring their own ballpoint pens or rulers,” he wrote.

So do not let your hatred for a people of a different religion force you to commit injustices or worse to commit crimes.  Everyone has one vote only. So vote wisely.”

Pemantau to recruit 10,000 to observe ‘dirtiest ever’ GE

Three civil groups have banded together to launch the citizen’s campaign, Pemantau Pilihan Raya Rakyat (Pemantau), which aims at mobilizing some 10,000 citizens as observers to ensure the looming 13th general election is free of fraud.

NONEElectoral reforms pressure group Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan (left) said volunteers of Pemantau, devised by Bersih, Malaysians for Free and Fair Elections (Mafrel) and Pusat Komas, will “observe the election process from the campaigning period and voting day, as well as carry out media monitoring”.

She added to ensure Pemantau remains nonpartisan, the 10,000 they hope to recruit must not be a member of any political party.

“Members of political parties cannot be observers. We need to maintain the nonpartisan nature of the observers,” she said.

Previously, during a press conference held on Dec 17, Ambiga had chastised the Election Commission for its seeming lack of commitment towards real reform and claimed that the coming polls will be “one of the dirtiest elections ever”.

Pua’s statement required in ROS probe into Suaram

alt

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 – The Registrar of Societies (ROS) probe into human rights NGO Suaram has widened to include DAP publicity chief Tony Pua who was called in to assist investigations.

According to The Star, Pua, who is also Petaling Jaya Utara MP, said he received a letter requiring him to record a statement at the ROS office in Putrajaya this coming Thursday.

“I am shocked that I am being required to give a statement to the ROS with regard to their investigations.

“I have nothing to do with Suaram,” he told reporters this at a press conference in Parliament lobby on Tuesday.

Pua noted he spoke of Suaram while in Dewan Rakyat and had also issued press statements regarding the case.

“I will discuss to my lawyers to determine if I should attend to give a statement or not,” he said, adding that an application would be filed with the courts on Wednesday.

ROS had also summoned Bersih activist Maria Chin Abdullah on Friday and Malaysian Bar president Lim Chee Wee on Monday for their statements to be recorded later this week.

Both Chin and Lim also expressed surprised that they were called for their statements despite having nothing to do with Suaram.

Suaram is being probed for receiving funds from foreign sources.

Cop unaware of constitutional right to assembly

A police officer in charge of a duty sector during the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 24 told the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) inquiry today he is not aware that freedom of assembly is guaranteed by the federal constitution.

“I don’t know,” said Inspector Farid Sairi when asked about the matter by lawyer Roger Chan, who was holding a watching brief for the Bar Council, on the 15th day of the inquiry into alleged human rights abuses during and after the April 28 pro-electoral reform rally.

Farid, however, was not able to inform the panel of anything else of any significance since his duty sector, which included the restaurant and church next to the Royal Selangor Club, was far from any action and faced away from Dataran Merdeka.

He did confirm that he saw detained Bersih protestors being taken to the holding area near the social club and that some of them appeared to be injured but said he noticed no other details.

He was also unsure if the detainees had medical assistance, but saw an ambulance parked near the holding area.

Apart from that, he claimed that he and the nearly 300 police officers on standby in his sector did not see nor hear anything of the chaos that happened on the other side of Dataran Merdeka.

Farid was the 31st witness called before Suhakam’s inquiry panel after a public outcry over allegedly disproportionate police response to the gathering, which was not only the largest in recent times but one that saw the sternest crowd dispersal actions yet taken by the police.

Farid and another colleague took the stand today, before proceedings were postponed for lunch.

‘I was scared’

When the hearing reconvened at 2.30pm, Inspector Ambri Mohd Nayan, the 33rd witness was called to the stand.

“They looked like they want(ed) to fight,” said Ambri, who is stationed at the fourth battalion of General Operations Force (GOF) at the central brigade, where Poru 15 was drawn from.

Faced with the aggressive crowd, he said that he “was scared” and was afraid for the safety of his person and his men.

“If they rushed us, we 48 against over 8,000. I don’t know…”

However, he maintained that he and his 48-men unit were only doing their duty to maintain public order without malice, his priority being to ensure the safety of his men and the protesters themselves by preventing any direct physical confrontation.

Ambri was describing the situation when his unit was tasked to assist another Poru detachment and later a stranded Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) water cannon truck in Jalan Tun Perak near Masjid Jamek when they were faced with nearly ten thousand protesters during the rally.

The proceedings today ended with his testimony with the public hearing scheduled to continue on Wednesday.

Bersih to raise RM250k for victims of police brutality

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) has issued a public appeal for donations to its ‘Make a difference with RM1? campaign to be used for the medical and legal expenses of victims of police brutality during the April 28 Bersih 3.0 rally.

azlanThe fund will be provided to victims of police brutality who took legal action against the authorities as well as to pay for their medical expenses, the electoral reform coalition said in a statement yesterday.

Bersih said its goal was to raise RM250,000, from which RM150,000 would be used to cover bail money, legal administrative expenses and medical costs, whereas another RM100,000 will be used to fund Bersih’s awareness campaign and communications.

Bersih has a team of lawyers who are offering free legal service to fight a battery of cases.

Ten members of the Bersih steering committee have been hit for damages amounting to RM122,000, which the authorities claim was caused during the rally.

“The government also wants general damages, interest and a declaration that Bersih breached Section 6(2)(g) of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) despite the fact that the government has declared the PAA as a revolutionary law that would facilitate peaceful assemblies,” Bersih lamented.

NONEIn addition, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has ordered Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan and committee member Maria Chin Abdullah to pay RM351,203.45 for damages caused during the same event.

The said damages include “landscaping and trees, the cost of setting up metal barricades, cost of transport and support staff, damage to signboards and barriers, as well as overtime allowances, food, drink and transport costs for law enforcers”.

Bersih to launch another round of campaign

According to Bersih, about half of the money raised will be used for a nationwide awareness campaign for electoral reform ahead of the general election.

The campaign involves printing leaflets, producing cartoon video clips, the establishment of a ‘Bersih TV’, conducting workshops and forums to highlight Bersih’s eight demands as well as activities to bring out the youth to vote in the election.

“With your backing, the core message of ‘Keluar Mengundi Lawan Penipuan’ will reach far and wide, thus putting pressure on the authorities to implement the necessary changes and for you as a voter to decide wisely,” said the coalition.

Donations for Bersih’s RM1 campaign can be made through its CIMB account: ‘Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor’, account no 12380000661-10-0.

“The funds collected will be regularly updated on our website with audited accounts made available,” said Bersih.

“As the next general election looms closer, Bersih 2.0 seeks your support. The work still needs to continue and we need to work together for all of us to carry on.”

The Road to Merdeka: Freedom

The Road to Merdeka: Freedom

In the third installment of the Road to Merdeka series, blogger John F Seademon highlights how the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA) and several other acts that were reviewed last year marked the beginning for Malaysians to exercise their freedom responsibly.

“Sometimes a brave thing like this is necessary,” former Inspector General of Police Tun Mohammed Hanif Omar was quoted as saying in the blog post, in response to Najib’s speech on Malaysia Day last year.

“It has been a year since the Prime Minister announced the doing-away with the Internal Security Act and the Emergency Ordinances.

“It was my hope that the move would have been reciprocated with more mature acts by activists and opposition-linked movements,” Seademon wrote.

While the new found freedom will allow Malaysians to exercise their freedom better, Seademon reminded it also means it is about time Malaysians show maturity and accountability in the way they speak, write and act.

“It is time for Malaysians to open up instead of having myopic views about things that do not represent their beliefs, be it personal or political. It is all about self-censorship. It is about nation-building, not nation-demolishing.”

“It is telling us all to stop manipulating each other, or lie about things when we know the truth. It is about standing up not for ourselves, but for the longevity of this nation,” the post read.

Using the Bersih movement and the police as examples, Seademon explained it means the people have a better chance to exercise freedom to assemble within the limits of the law.

“If there is a dispute, both parties (organisers and the police) will have to fulfill the requirements of the law by going for a judicial review. The court of law has the final say – definitely not the organisers, definitely not the police,” he added.

“If you truly value this land we call our home, defend it together, not against one another. Use this new-found “freedom” to unite.”

Threatened with aggression, Samad cries ‘peace’

Having consistently advocated peace, Bersih co-chairperson A Samad Said is deeply saddened by the reaction to the ‘Janji Bersih’ rally, held in conjunction with the independence day celebration at Dataran Merdeka.

NONE“We are just carrying out a noble cause, and for this we are accused of being kotor (dirty) and for breaking the law,” lamented the national laureate, who is fondly known as Pak Samad.

Samad said this when asked about the threat from an anti-Bersih group, the Kuala Lumpur Petty Traders Action Council, that its members would “respond aggressively” if the ‘Janji Bersih’ gathering was to proceed on the night of Aug 30.

Malay daily Berita Harian on Monday quoted council chairperson Jamal Md Yunus as saying that he was tired of political games which he claimed caused inconvenience to the public and that the petty traders would “respond aggressively to prevent” the gathering.

The meaning of ‘aggressive’

NONEJamal is the owner of the famed Sekinchan Ikan Bakar chain restaurant and had, prior to this, threatened to organise a ‘protest bazaar’ outside Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan’s house for her role in the Bersih 3.0 gathering.

Responding to the threat of aggression, Samad said: “That is his (Jamal’s) right, and (we seek his) wisdom (to explain) what he means by aggressive.”

He added that another meeting on the logistics and other matters pertaining to the Janji Bersih gathering will be held tonight.

Those in support of the event – which is aimed at reminding the government to fulfil its promise for clean and fair elections – will don yellow at Dataran Merdeka on the night of Aug 30 and the participants will join the government-organised countdown to Merdeka Day.

Of cyanide or political agenda in the making

Of cyanide or political agenda in the making

In their cleverly orchestrated move, these political parties portray themselves to be so concerned with the welfare of the people, when their ultimate agenda is to fish for votes, nothing less.

They then come into the picture and hijack the whole issue by spinning lies and distortions and creating fears and doubts on the people.

That way they drum up more support and could magnify the issue into greater proportions to create the impact, again for their own gain.

We have seen clear cases such as the Bersih movement being hijacked by political parties and their initial objective derailed.

We see the peaceful demonstrations turning chaotic when mobsters take to the streets to create chaos.

The Lynas Corporation rare earth plant in Kuantan is another example of hijacking by the Opposition and made into a political issue.

Experts have come up with scientific explanation that it is not harmful but some NGOs still say it is. And who is behind those NGOs. No prizes for getting it right.

Issues have been so distorted to the extent that now we are rather confused and sometimes do not know who is speaking the truth, or are they half truth or utter lies.
